Marsden Material Girls

One of my favourite things at the Auckland Festival of quilts was this interactive display made by the Marsden Material Girls.
161
This photo of an derelict house was enlarged and sliced up into four sections. Enough slices were made to create five houses.
164
165

Each slice has velcro attached to their back and the public were invited to move the slices about to create new houses.

Guest Speaker John Nielsen- Longarm Quilter

At the last club meeting the guest speaker was John Nielsen. John is a local longarm quilter. He spoke about battings, and prep for your quilts when taking them to a quilter. He also bought some of his personal quilts to share.

041
Here's John as he started to speak, I love how he speaks with his hands.

047
One of Johns older quilts.

050
John says his quilts have become more simple in style now, the quilt above is made with a mixture whites and off white fabrics, which unfortunately is hard to pick up in this photograph.

052
A simple design with complex quilting. From memory I think John said the red fabric was a recycled tablecloth.

058
This also has beautiful quilting, but is hard to see in the photo.

059
Now on this one you CAN see the quilting. This is actually the back of the quilt, below is the front of the quilt. The thread was chosen to match the front fabric.
061

063
The patterned fabric in this quilt is a satin jacquard fabric. John used both sides of this fabric (the pale blue/grey is the back)

 067
John's Disappearing Hourglass quilt, which he said was a lot of fun to make.

073
John explaining the process of making the Disappearing Hourglass Quilt.

If you would like to make your own Disappearing Hourglass Quilt below is a very good tutorial form The Missouri Star Quilt Company.

I took 230 photos which I have culled, but still I think there will be one more post after this one! Anyway enjoy these, and hopefully there will be one more tomorrow, then Show n Tell from Saturday next.

AFQ 2015 part 4

A few of Whangarei P&Q Club Members are also Auckland Guild Members, so here are some of their quilts that were on show in Auckland.

027
As a keen library user I recognised this image straight away. It is the 'Old Library' in Whangarei.
Congratulations on winning a ribbon Ngaire.

Lynne's cheeky little frog also won a ribbon, congratulations Lynne

Sonya had several pieces all with cats, I love this first one with the cats waiting for any scraps from the fisherman.

The lighting at the Auckland show was so much better than at Symposium, so I took some more photos of Rose's entry in the Hoffman Challenge too.
I know Rose has fabric for next years challenge. I wonder if she has started on it yet?
