Show n Tell September 2013

There was just a small Show n Tell last Saturday. (Everyone saving up for next month's AGM maybe?)
Anyway here it is,  enjoy.
017
Carmel Spray started this quilt in 1986, and recently got it out of the UFO cupboard again. This time she is determined to finish it!

013
Another by Carmel. This one is only 2 years old though! It was put on the back burner as Carmel's shoulders where giving her trouble. So Carmel asked Sandy to quilt it for her.

011
Shelia Udjur made this cute growth chart for her youngest grandson's 1st birthday.

005
Lynne O'Donnell started this in a class with Susan Brubaker-Knapp at the recent Taupo Symposium.

001
Robyn Havelson made this using stencils and paint sticks, and then machine quilted it. Love the soft colours.

007
Lynda Parker's "Mad Bag' as in you'd have to be mad to make one! Lynda decided to recreate a bag she had bought, but the design was more difficult than she thought it would be!

003
Leonie Fleeming made this bag for her grandson to keep his toy cars. Love the button wheels!

Quilts from the Hamilton Craft & Quilt Fair

I meet up with my friend Donna at the Hamilton show and we had a great day together catching up, looking at quilts, and of course shopping at the Merchant Mall. Shows are always better when shared with someone else.
So now I'll share some of my favourite quilts from the show with you too.

034

This quilt made me gasp when I turned the corner and saw it. Just amazing, I loved it!

044

The faces of the girls are incredible. This was the runner up, but I think I would have chosen it as the winner.

045

046

This was the winner, it was impressive but didn't hang flat.

048

047

detail showing how some segments where painted with metallic fabric paints.

041

I really liked the textures of the background, and the quilting too.

detail of the fabrics and laces used in the background of the quilt.

The bees just made this quilt for me! Loved them.

The colours of this really glowed.

I really liked the applique on this one, and how it was 'woven' around the pieced blocks.

Hearts and Flowers

Another display at the Hamilton Craft &Quilt Fair was of Free-Form Knitting and Crochet.
I only took at few photos, but they were all amazing.

Tea Cosies

Loani Prior (Queen of the Tea Cosies)
-was a featured artist at the Hamilton Craft and Quilt Fair.
Her Tea Cosies are really fun and I especially loved her names for each one.
015
This one is 'Carmen Miranda'

016
The little egg cosy is sweet.

013
Can't remember the name of this one sorry, but aren't the flowers great.

012
This one was called 'Gone Feral'

017
'Starry Night' reminded me of punk hair styles in the 80's!

018
'Spotted Gourd' looked very Dr Seuss inspired to me.

020
If you are feeling inspired to make you own Tea Cosy
Loani has Ms Daffy Dill's pattern as a free download.

Scrap Split 9 Patches

IMG_20130809_144424
I have actually been doing some sewing over the last couple of weeks. I had this shoe box full of 2 and a half inch squares that I cut last year when I was having a tidy up of my scraps. I decided to make Split 9 Patches with them and try and empty that box.
Anyway more cutting was needed as I wanted to use neutral fabrics on the other side of the blocks.

I was quite pleased when I had made a few and laid them out to see what they looked like.

So then I got carried away and made 144 of them.

Here all 144 laid out on my lounge floor. (No Oscar didn't play with them)
Not sure if I like this layout, so I tried some others.

Mmmm not really good....

But maybe diagonal lines like this, or the first version? Or something completely different?

I'll ponder this while I'm in Hamiltion this weekend. I'm catching up with my Son, and going to the Quilt and Craft Show with a friend, so I'll take some photos to share.

I have to stay in Te Awamutu on Saturday night as everything was booked out. The reason? The All Blacks are playing Argentina in Hamilton!
